Officials in China have confirmed that about 102 people have died in a 6.6 magnitude earthquake which hit China's southwestern Sichuan province. The shallow quake hit near the city of Ya'an, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, just after 8am (00:00 GMT) on Saturday and injured 2,200 people. The official Xinhua news agency said 147 of them were seriously injured.
The earthquake, which set off landslides and destroyed buildings, occurred close to where a big earthquake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008. It was followed by several aftershocks.
President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang said all efforts must be put into rescuing victims to limit the death toll.
