Roger Federer has been knocked out of the Madrid Open in the third round by 14th seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, 6-4 1-6 6-2.
Swiss second seed Federer who was the defending champion comes after the shock exit of world number one Novak Djokovic on Tuesday at the hands of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Federer's conqueror Nishikori now plays Spanish wildcard Pablo Andujar in the quarter-finals.
Federer, who was just returned from a 2 month rest said: "I'm disappointed with my match. Today Nishikori played better and the best man won."
